Emily and I have known each other since I was 13 and she was 11 years old. We grew up in Portland, Oregon, and were brought together by a common sport, fencing. Moving to the East Coast together for graduate school a few years ago, we’ve grown to love the city of Boston. Planning out my proposal, I wanted to keep it a surprise and to ask her at a beautiful Boston landmark. I chose the Parkman Bandstand in Boston Common and, to prepare for the big moment, a group of our friends arranged roses across the steps leading into the gazebo and in a heart shape in the center of the monument. Val contributed the final piece by taking gorgeous photographs of the entire event, from our walk up to the gazebo, to the question itself, and the moments afterwards.
